GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Working within the remit and targets developed by the Senior Leadership Team, and under the day-to-day supervision of the Head of Upper School you will:
• provide university guidance counselling for Upper School students at Wycombe Abbey School Nanjing.
• adhere to curriculum timelines, planning of time and meeting due deadlines.
1. SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE
1.1. You should have knowledge and experience of university guidance.
1.2. You should keep yourself informed of current developments within your specialist field.
2. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
University Counselling and Placement:
2.1. Offer full support to the graduating students (G12) with their applications to universities in many countries.
Maintain a comprehensive set of resources to provide all the information
necessary for students to make intelligent choices about universities and meet
deadlines set by the school, overseas universities and by UCAS, (including
specific timelines for students applying for medicine, Oxbridge, or Ivy League
Universities).
2.2. Promote Wycombe Abbey School at University fairs and special marketing functions and to establish personal links with selected admissions officers at overseas universities.
Specific duties:
2.3. Brief Upper School students (G7-12) about the process of applying for university.
2.4. Provide regular and up-to-date information to parents about the university application process. This is to be delivered online and in-person.
2.5. Provide frequent communication to parents in G11 and G12 about their child’s university research and application status - including personal statement drafts and information on Cilafo;
2.6. Provide feedback to students and parents on what Wycombe Abbey School considers to be appropriate university choices.
2.7. Attend scheduled PTC events to meet parents and deliver information workshops.
2.8. Ensure every student has the opportunity to have scheduled personal interviews with the Universities Counsellor.
2.9. Responsible for the visits of University Admissions Officers to the Nanjing campus.
2.10. Responsible for the preparation of references thorough proof reading of student transcripts and oversee the collation of university applications.
2.11. Inform and train academic staff about their role in supporting the university applications process.
2.12. Co-ordinate with the Exams Officer the registration and on-site conduct of any SAT testing days at appropriate times and conduct SAT/ACT preparation sessions as necessary for students applying to US Universities.
2.13. Coordinate the University Mentor Programme with Wycombe Abbey alumni.
2.14. To deliver information, advice and guidance presentations and individual student meetings at subject options time - G8 into 9 (IGCSE) and G10 into G11 (Sixth Form.)
2.15. Other duties deemed reasonable may also be assigned by your line manager
3. SUBJECT APPLICATION
As a teacher you should:
3.1. Plan, prepare and review schemes of work and lessons, keeping lesson notes which show continuity and progression.
3.2. Advise the Head of Department in your department on the preparation and development of schemes of work.
3.3. Set appropriately demanding expectations for each pupil; differentiation strategies are essential.
3.4. Employ a range of teaching strategies appropriate to the age, ability, and attainment level of the pupils.
3.5. Select and use appropriate resources, including Information Technology.
3.6. Present lessons using clear language and in a stimulating manner, using a variety of teaching styles as appropriate.
3.7. Set and mark homework in line with School policy.
3.8. Contribute to the development of pupils’ language and communication skills, with specific reference to university guidance
3.9. Set suitable work in the event of foreseen absence and other instances, wherever possible.
4. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
As a teacher you should endeavour to:
4.1. Create and maintain a purposeful and orderly environment for the pupils within your class.
4.2. Safeguard pupils’ health and safety
4.3. Ensure setting/grouping that is appropriate for particular learning purposes, i.e. whole class, pairs, small groups, individual.
4.4. Use appropriate sanctions and rewards in line with School policy.
4.5. Maintain pupils’ interest and motivation
4.6. Ensure that the classroom environment,including furniture, décor and equipment is respected by all pupils.
4.7. Maintain vibrant and informative displays of work both inside classrooms/labs and in shared areas (corridors).
4.8. Order and maintain adequate stocks of teaching materials and resources, working within your delegated budget.
5. ASSESSMENT AND RECORDING
As a teacher you should endeavour to:
5.1. Identify the current level of attainment of individual pupils and, refer to other information available in the school.
5.2. Judge how well a pupil performs against the standard expected of a pupil of that age and take remedial action if necessary.
5.3. Assess and record systematically the progress of individual pupils in line with School policy.
5.4. Mark work using the school’s marking policy and give formative feedback to pupils regularly on their progress.
5.5. Use assessment as a fundamental part of teaching.
5.6. Prepare pupils for public examinations; assessing, recording, an reporting as required.
5.7. Plan, prepare and review assessments throughout the year.
6. Tutoring
As a Tutor you have a responsibility to:
6.1. Promote the general progress and well-being of any group of pupils assigned to you.
6.2. Provide guidance and advice on educational and social matters and on their education and future careers, including information on sources of more expert help.
6.3. Make records of, and report on, pupils’ personal and social needs.
6.4. Communicate and consult with parents.
6.5. Act as a mentor to all the pupils in your tutor group.
7. Performance Management
You should:
7.1. Participate in arrangements for the appraisal of your own performance and that of others in your department.
7.2. Review from time to time your own methods of teaching.
7.3. Participate in further training and professional development, including training which aims to meet needs identified in appraisal objectives or statements.
8. Core Professional / Technical competencies required
Abilities
8.1. Very good knowledge of Higher Education requirements around the world, particularly the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, and Australia.
8.2. Ability to contact and communicate with Higher Education institutions worldwide and organize meetings and presentations.
8.3. To able to write strong college recommendations in English for students that are tailored to the needs of the university the applicant is applying.
8.4. To be able to effectively conduct guidance interviews with students.
8.5. Ability to communicate effectively, in person and in writing, particularly to parents.
8.6. Good presentation skills, particularly to students and parents.
8.7. Strong organizational and management skills.
8.8. Ability to work cooperatively in a team and motivate teamwork.
8.9. Strong inter-personal skills.
8.10. Share the vision and values of Wycombe Abbey School.

10. Working Time
10.1. You have a responsibility to participate in meetings which relate to the curriculum or the administration or organization of the school, including morning briefings and pastoral arrangements.
10.2. WASNJ is a boarding school, and together with all members of the academic staff you will be expected to undertake boarding duties.
11. Curriculum Extension
11.1. All WASNJ staff contribute to the extra-curricular and/or sport program.
11.2. All WASNJ staff share in the extended life of the school.
11.3. During time gained due to alternative provision for pupils you may be directed to:
 Develop/revise curriculum materials
 Assist colleagues in appropriate planned team teaching
 Provide additional learning support
 Undertake planned activities with pupils transferring to the school in August
12. Other Responsibilities
12.1. Organise and participate in visits, excursions, and enrichment activities outside the classroom.
12.2. Contribute to events within the school community.
12.3. As may reasonably be required by a line manager in agreement with the Executive Headmaster.
Ensuring Accountability
As a teacher you should:
 provide regular, comprehensive reports and formal and informal information on pupil performance.
 contribute to the implementation and management of departmental statistical information on pupil attainment
 to establish benchmarking andcalculate value-added.
 provide information on pupil performance for parents through Parent meetings.
Other
As a teacher you should:
 support initiatives which motivate and promote team building and help to create a positive work environment.
 remain abreast of trends and research in relevant areas.
 work under significant time and operational pressures and can coordinate a variety of projects simultaneously.
