Job Title: Lab Manager(Fabrication and Digital Media)

About HKUST(GZ) CMA Lab
The Computational Media and Arts (CMA) thrust at HKUST (Guangzhou) brings together researchers and practitioners working at the intersection of computing, design, and creative expression. The CMA Lab encompasses a range of specialized facilities, including a prototyping and maker space, sound and computer music studios, digital video production spaces, computer graphics, teaching spaces with computer workstations, and flexible multi-use areas. Together these spaces support hands-on fabrication, media production, interdisciplinary collaboration, and research across the university community.
Position Overview
The CMA Lab is seeking a CMA Lab Manager to serve as the senior technician overseeing the daily operations of all CMA Lab facilities and providing technical support. This is a full-time position that includes managing a small team of lab technicians. The CMA Lab Manager will coordinate across the lab’s diverse spaces—from the maker space and sound studios to the digital video production spaces and teaching environments—ensuring they are operational, well-maintained, well-equipped, and actively supporting innovation and community engagement across CMA and the university community. The job also involves documentation and inventory activities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Facility & Equipment Management
· Oversee operations across all CMA Lab spaces: prototyping/maker space, sound and computer music studios, digital video production spaces, computer graphics, teaching labs, and multi-use areas.
· Manage the maker space equipment suite, including 3D fabrication equipment, textiles and e-textiles equipment, electronics and soldering stations, and rapid prototyping materials.
· Coordinate maintenance, scheduling, and management of equipment, and delegate procurement of resources and consumables across all facilities.
· Develop and maintain inventory and user-friendly documentation, tutorials, and safety guides for lab equipment and workflows.
· Ensure teaching spaces and computer workstations are properly configured and maintained for coursework and research use.
2. Thrust & University Engagement
· Work with CMA faculty and students to align lab resources and programming with thrust research and teaching needs.
· Support events, workshops, and collaborative projects that engage students and faculty across the university.
· Establish and maintain connections with other lab facilities across campus to effectively direct users to appropriate resources for their research and teaching needs.
· Foster an inclusive, welcoming environment for users of all experience levels.
· Develop connections with the wider Greater Bay Area maker and creative technology community.
3. Innovation & Research Support
· Support faculty and student research projects that require fabrication, prototyping, or iterative design.
· Provide technical support for CMA exhibitions, installations, and public-facing events.
· Stay current with emerging technologies and recommend new tools or workflows that expand the lab’s capabilities.
4. Team Leadership & Administration
· Lead and coordinate a small team of lab technicians, assigning responsibilities across the CMA Lab’s various spaces.
· Hire, train, and mentor technicians and student assistants.
· Develop and manage the lab’s operating budget.
· Maintain records of lab usage, project outcomes, and equipment status to inform planning and reporting.

Qualifications
1. Required skills
· Bachelor’s degree in engineering, industrial design, media arts, instructional technology, digital media, audio-visual technology, or related field. Or relevant education backgrounds such as Fab Academy diploma or similar
· Demonstrated understanding of the open-access, collaborative, and community-driven philosophy central to fab labs, makerspaces, and hackerspaces.
· 3+ years of experience managing or working in a makerspace, fab lab, media production facility, or similar technical environment.
· Demonstrated proficiency with fabrication equipment and familiarity with at least one additional domain such as audio/music production spaces and equipment
· Experience supervising technical staff or coordinating teams.
· Strong organizational and communication skills.
· Proficiency in English
2. Desired skills
· Proficiency in Mandarin
· Management experience in a university, research institution or community
· Familiarity with computational design tools, audio/video production workflows.
Compensation
· Monthly salary: 25-30k RMB, commensurate with experience.
· Benefits package per HKUST(Guangzhou) staff policies.
